Well-known Hereford breeders Malcolm and Ingrid McConochie will hold their last ever bull sale in June.

While it is the end of an era for the breeders, it is not the end of their genetics.

Half of the stud herd has been sold to Hazel Timperley and Matt Clark – Timperlea Downs Herefords in Canterbury. Aaron and Leaha Hannah – Hannah Herefords in Nelson – have bought a selection of the R2 PTIC stud heifers.

Malcolm and Ingrid are keeping the rest of the stud herd as commercial cows. Their daughter Rebecca and her husband Bill will keep her Rotoiti stud cows and run them in Gore, alongside Bill’s family who own Waikaka Herefords. Rebecca started the Rotoiti stud in 1999 and her cows have run alongside the Lake Station herd ever since.

The Lake Station herd was established in 1982 and the family have been loyal to and active within the Hereford community. Malcolm says they have remained committed to Herefords because they offer the best balance of meat traits, fertility and constitution with a beautiful temperament.

The ‘last chance’ Lake Station bull sale will be held June 13, 11am, onfarm at St Arnaud and features 25 bulls.
